Woman's weekly

A rather pleasant surprise at Heathrow Terminal 5. EW (Heath Ledger cover) sitting on the "Women's weeklies" section was the new edition, right next to People and US Weekly. So, I'm thinking I may to consider a regular, weekly trip to Heathrow. It's not expecially far from me - train ride and a tube journey - and if I was guaranteed the magazine every week, then it's a no brainer.

I asked the store manager about the frequency EW arrives on the shelves but she seemed pretty clueless. However, it was a good find and has given me hope for getting the mag weekly (and whilst it's still relatively current!).

I'm going to the news stand at Oxford Circus on Monday morning to find out what is happening with their stock. The owner claims it hasn't arrived since mid December but I'm not sure I believe it.

Glasgow's a go go!

So, I'm wandering around Borders on Buchanan Street in Glasgow and would do I come across? The CSI edition of EW from last week... I got a few strange looks when I started taking a photo of the magazine rack on my phone but who cares? Pretty excited to find it there - I had given up hope of finding that one.

Bad news from the news stand in London though. My brother in law went along yesterday to buy the new edition and the seller told him that he hadn't had a new edition since mid December... That is very worrying news and I will investigate that further when I get back to London.

CSI Edinburgh

Still missing last week's CSI edition of Entertainment Weekly, and at this point, I can't really see me being able to buy it. The new Heath Ledger edition is already out, so I think I'm going to have accept defeat. On the plus side, the Johnny Depp cover edition was very good. Excellent articles about the Oscars, new Spring movies and a fantastic couple of pics from the new Terminator film.

I'm still in Edinburgh at the moment doing some work. I mentioned a few days that I would tell you about the journey up from London... Wife and I set off around 5pm to get a 7.30pm flight from Heathrow. Firstly, we got stuck in football traffic and were seriously delayed. Then, by the time we got onto the motorway, there had been an accident which pretty much ended my hopes of getting the flight. Dee at the Travel dept of my employers managed to get me on a 10pm flight, so I still made it up to Edinburgh. And bought Entertainment Weekly!

I think my brother in law Fraser is going to try to get to my favourite news stand in London to buy the new EW (Heath Ledger cover). Fingers crossed...

When I get back to London, I am going to take some pictures of this news stand and post them.

In flight entertainment...

Success!! Managed to buy last weeks edition on the shelf at WH Smiths at Heathrow Airport (Terminal 1). I had to go to all 6 WH Smith's inside the terminal building to actually find it (right next to Horse and Hound, oddly) but it was well worth the effort. That's the good news... The bad news is that the store manager told me that they're not getting it in again for another month. So, I'll be back to my regular news stand next time...

I'll go into more detail about the mag tomorrow, and also describe the journey to the airport to get it, which was pretty stressful.

The new edition with CSI on the cover is out tomorrow (Monday) and I'm about 500 miles away from getting it... I'm in Scotland working all week, and have no hope of getting to the news stand in London. So, I'm just trying to figure out how the hell I'm going to get it!

I was telling someone at work about this blog and they just looked at me incredulously. So, that's inspired me to keep going...

Airport

Occasionally, WH Smiths (the UK's biggest magazine seller) will stock Entertainment Weekly on it's bulging magazine racks. Unfortunately, the only stores to (infrequently) sell it are based at Heathrow Airport... However, as luck would have it, I'm heading there on Saturday and fully intend to board my flight clutching a copy.

This week's edition (pictured above) has the bloke from CSI on the cover (he's now left the show) and some chit chat on the upcoming Oscars. In reality, I could read most of the magazine online at ew.com but it's just not the same. Believe me, I have tried doing this on several occasions. The sense of satisfaction in actually hunting down a copy (1 day after publication in the US) just cannot compete with reading it at their official website. Can anyone else understand this?

An introduction

Hello. I am a British guy living in London with an odd weekly ritual. Every Monday, come rain or shine, I absolutely MUST get to a small news stand near Oxford Circus to purchase a little known (to Brits...) American magazine called 'Entertainment Weekly'. The news stand only sells 6 copies each week (and are ridiculously overpriced), and it's always touch and go as to whether I will actually get the magazine before it sells out. Frankly, it's a nerve wracking journey each week - because if I don't get it, I'll be pretty cheesed off.

If I am not at the news stand by Monday evening at 7pm, my chances of getting the magazine drop considerably. Not there by Tuesday?,You're playing with fire... Leave it to Wednesday and I will face severe disappointment.

I will usually stop at nothing to purchase this magazine every Monday (just 1 day after it is published in the US). So, in this blog I will detail the, often, ridiculous lengths I'm prepared to go to in order to make my way to the news stand each week.

Family and friends think this is a rather odd. I welcome your comments.

Over the coming weeks and months, I will also post pictures of the news stand in central London that sells Entertainment Weekly, and also, post a few snaps of me (hopefully) holding the magazine - every Monday or whenever/wherever I finally manage to get it.

Be warned though, this will be a bittersweet blog at times. I have yet to purchase the magazine in 2009, despite more than 12 visits to the news stand....
